The media production industry has undergone a revolution in the way it<br>
creates and distributes content. Industry-specific technologies<br>
developed over decades have been replaced by IT-based hardware and<br>
software infrastructure. Now the industry is looking afresh at the way<br>
it works and is engaging enthusiastically with the R&D community to<br>
fully explore the potential of the IT transition. <br>
<br>
In this lecture, Paul Walland, Digital Media Group manager at University<br>
of Southampton's IT Innovation Centre, will present a European<br>
perspective on IT-based production. Drawing on his 20 year experience in<br>
the broadcast technology industry, Paul will describe the key<br>
motivations that are driving continuing innovation by content producers<br>
and technology providers. <br>

He will introduce pan-European initiatives through which the industry is<br>
actively influencing the European R&D agenda, speculate on the relevance<br>
of emerging European Research Initiatives such as Service-based<br>
Everything in the Future Internet, and highlight opportunities for<br>
transatlantic collaboration such as through EC R&D funding programmes.<br>

Paul will also present some of the work that is being conducted by his<br>
own group at IT Innovation Centre in collaboration with major UK and<br>
European production and technology companies. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
