<div>In
1968, coining a phrase that was destined to become a cliché, Andy
Warhol promised that “In the future, everyone will be famous for 15
minutes.” More recently, new media technologies make the allure of
fame seem more accessible than ever. Of course, keeping a Face Book
profile or posting videos to You Tube does not guarantee instant
recognition. What matters is that these technologies, like Warhol’s
life and art, present us with the “promise” of recognition, fame,
possibly even immortality. The speaker will discuss the relationship
between media technologies and the desire for immortality, drawing on
Warhol’s life and art as a case study.</div>
