ASEC (Accounting Student Education Contribution) is running a free
tax clinic right on campus. Held in the MPR at the SLC on
April 1st-3rd, 12-10 pm, any low-income earners (individuals below
$2400) can go there to file their tax returns. All volunteers are
students from the School of Accounting and Finance (SAF), trained by the
Canada Revenue Agency.

Now what are the benefits of doing your taxes this year? Here are the
major ones:

Free Money in the Mail: You can qualify for a refundable tax credit from
the Ontario government of $100, provided that:

you lived in Ontario for the majority of 2008

you were 16 or older on December 31 of 2008

no one else claimed an Ontario Sales Tax Credit for you

This should apply to many UW students; after filing, you will
receive a cheque of $100 in a few months, delivered right to your mailing
address. For more information, or if you have a spouse or a dependent to
qualify for even more money in this credit, visit

http://www.rev.gov.on.ca/english/credit/stc/

More free Money: If you're 19 or older, you could qualify for ANOTHER
refundable tax credit, this time from the Federal government. The
calculation for this credit is a little more complicated, but the basic
amount is $242.00, so you will get that in the mail if you did not get
paid more that $7851.00 in 2008. For full details and possible additions
(i.e. having a dependent), visit

is an example of what if you get if you're single, separated, divorced or
widowed

Future Money: If you had a job that earned some money, even less than
$1000, you add to your RRSP room. Your RRSP room lets you put more money
to save against further taxes, saving you money in the future.

Many other claimable credits: For example, if you live on-campus
residence, did you know you also qualify for another $25? Check out

Most importantly, you did NOT need to have a job in 2008 to file your
taxes. This is a misconception that we're trying to fix, so tell all your
friends if you're interested!

So want to get started filing? Make sure to bring the following during
our free clinic days:

Your SIN (Social Insurance Number)
Any tax forms issued by the government (usually starts with a T, such as
T4; and if applied to you should have gotten them in the mail) Valid
copies (photocopied, scanned or faxed) are acceptable
All applicable receipts: (i.e. charitable expenses, child care expenses,
rent) NOTE: Although you normally need a rent receipt for housing, if you
are ON CAMPUS at UW, it is not needed, as it is just a $25.
Your tuition information - you can qualify for a credit if you have your
tuition information at hand (i.e. fees paid in 2008 for tuition ONLY);
unfortunately this credit is non-refundable (no money), but it is
something to file anyway to improve your RRSP room in the future; visit

info
Basic Personal Information along with Government-issued Photo ID: Mailing
address (to receive the money), date of birth, emergency contacts, etc.

So bring these documents to the clinic, and we'll have them filed to you
in no time. Volunteers will be using the electronic UFile system with
you, which is a simple interview based system (we ask you questions for
certain tax criteria, and you answer them), so there is no need for
manually line-by-line filing, and each filing should take 15-30 minutes.
We will be submitting your tax return through the E-file system.

So if you have any more questions about income limitations and tax
returns info, visit, www.asec.ca/taxclinic.php OR
e-mail us at taxclinic@asec.ca

On behalf of the whole Tax Clinic Team, we hope to help you with your
returns and may it be a speedy success!
