needed for archaeological lab work</b><br>

I
am seeking up to three additional student volunteers to help process
the archaeological finds from my excavation this summer on Baffin
Island. The finds consist of stone tools, flakes, and animal bones from
the Dorset and Pre-Dorset cultures, so they are between 1000 and 3500
years old. The bags containing the finds need to be inventoried but
much of the work will involve washing and counting the stone tools and
flakes, cleaning the animal bones, and then putting all of the finds
into new bags with proper labels. The volunteers will gain hands-on
experience in archaeological recording and handling procedures, as well
as familiarity with flaked stone artifact and debitage typology.<br>

- Volunteers should have taken ANTH 201 (Principles of Archaeology)<br>
- Volunteers must be willing to commit to at least one hour of work per
week for this term<br>

The work must take place during the hours when the Anthropology
Department office is open (Mondays to Fridays from 8:30 until 4:30)<br>
- Training and feedback will be provided<br>

Parenthetically,
if there is a third or fourth-year student who is interested in animal
bones from archaeological sites, part of the assemblage would be ideal
for an honours essay or for a two-term reading course. This site is the
first inland Dorset culture site to be extensively excavated so very
little is known about Dorset inland adaptations. Much of the faunal
assemblage is from just one species--caribou--and so identifications
will be relatively easy. However, I will only have this assemblage here
at UW for the next few months so all of the identifications would have
to be completed between now and sometime in March. A student who has
completed Dr. Liston's "Osteology for Archaeologists" course would be
ideally equipped to do this but I would be willing to consider training
someone in the context of a reading course.<br>
