<blockquote type="cite" cite align="center"><b>HANDS-ON ARCHAEOLOGY IN
SOUTHERN ONTARIO</b><br>
</blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite>This project is intended to provide
students interested in Ontario archaeology with experiences in a
diversity of work settings (lab, museum and field) across southern
Ontario. Working with professionals, the intent is to employ students
who have demonstrated an eagerness to pursue a career in archaeology,
but have limited or no practical experience. In this way, they can
obtain the key skills necessary to be employable, while discovering
first hand the exciting diversity of Ontario's heritage. The program
will entail processing artifact collections, travelling to several
site locations, and working with different archaeologists on either a
daily or weekly basis. Some of the projects being considered range
from excavation of a 3,000 year old hunting camps, historic Native
cabin sites, Late Woodland village sites, and research oriented
survey. Projects will relate either to on-going scholarly research, or
resource conservation tied to land use development. Students will be
working with leading scholars in the field of Ontario archaeology, as
well as with some of the most prominent and active consultant
companies in the province who regularly employ students over the
summer.<br>

<blockquote type="cite" cite>The intent of the Summer Experience
project will be to provide the students with a wide range of skills
and experiences:<br>
</blockquote>

<li>Training in archaeological field and lab methodologies, and
Ontario's culture history;
<li>Appreciation for the Ontario's archaeological heritage and how it
is conserved;
<li>Interpretation and display of Ontario's archaeological heritage;
<li>Meeting and working with archaeologists and First Nations
communities;
<li>Developing contacts for future employment/research opportunities;
<li>Interacting with the public.

<blockquote type="cite" cite>Both Ministry staff and the professional
archaeologists supervising the various projects will provide training
for the students in the field and in the lab. Because of the range of
partnerships involved, the students will finish the project with a
full suite of skills useful in seeking employment with archaeological
consulting companies; heritage tourism and interpretation;
administration of public programs; and historical research.<br>

<blockquote type="cite" cite>Duration of the Project: 7 weeks starting
On June 19th. Salary is minimum wage at a 36¼ hr work week. Means of
travel, per diem and out of town accommodation provided when necessary
(students will need to provide their own camping gear if required).
Students are responsible for arranging their own accommodation when
projects are based in the London area. Students should have a valid
driver's license and be prepared for hot and physically demanding
